This piece is from a series celebrating the freedom and sacred gift of sexuality in all of its diversity inspired forms. There is nothing wrong with it as long as it is consentual and between consenting adults, so enjoy this divinely given gift. Just don’t be a dick about it! I think that this message is even more important in today’s climate of hate and repression. Sexual freedom is a form of rebellion and liberation. Every positive act of it is a push back against the darkness and repressive ignorance of the day. I vote for sex for the win. Enjoy! Resist! Overcome!

My work explores what flows between magickal divinity, and earthy eroticism; petroglyphs, old religions, sexuality, dreams, altered consciousness, political nausea, science, pop culture, evolution, spiritual growth, nature and world that seems to have turned it’s back upon it.

Most of my abstract works are emotional in nature based on my experiences so far on this planet. I like integrating naturalistic imagery as a grounding element in these compositions. My main interest in still photograph y is in it's ability to create a time capsule in a fraction of a second capturing details that would be easily be missed in a fast moving video. My other interest is abstract and kinetic sculpture, mostly influenced by David Smith and Jean Tinguely. Tinguely's ability to turn worthless rusty junk into insightful mechanical marvels.I have also been influenced by most of the Dada artists who brought art to the common people, such as but not limited to Marcel Duchamp,Laslo Moholy -Nagy,Francis Picabia, Man Ray,and Alexander Calder. Having a complete machine shop permits me to make almost anything I want.

Like many a longterm quotidian painter, and particularly as a “painter among poets”, I see and feel a kind of talismanic magic in the ordinary — people, places, things, signage, the accoutrements of daily life, the detritus of the street.

Over the years, some recurrent motifs also found their way into my pictorial interpretation of Cornelius Agrippa’s Alphabet Malachim in 22 large paintings which can now be seen all together in An Angel Alphabet, published in 2025 by The Bodily Press (www.bodilypress.com).

Alan Powell

Alan Powell is an internationally exhibiting electronic media artist working in video, photography, performance, and multichannel installation. His 50-year career has been grounded in collaboration, community engagement, and embracing technological evolution in his artistic practice. He holds an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. In the 1970s, Alan co-founded Electron Movers, the video artist collective and Providence, RI’s first Media Arts Center. Electron Movers were vanguards in proving the capacity of video as an art form while staying deeply connected to Providence with immersive performances and community-oriented creative models.

Over five decades, Alan’s work has shown at The Kitchen, Hallswalls, CEPA, and The Museum of the Moving Image in New York; the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia; The Long Beach Museum in California and the Musee d’Arte Moderne in Paris. Videotapes from Alan’s thirty-year collaboration with Connie Coleman, his late partner, have been broadcast on PBS and are archived at Cornell University Library and Electronic Arts Intermix in NYC.

During their partnership, Alan and Coleman delved into experimental documentary, sculptural installation, as well as a return to their artistic backgrounds of traditional printmaking and fine arts to investigate mass media and explore culture and language systems.

Following Coleman’s death, Alan relocated his studio to the Catskills. His daily practice brings into alignment all the mediums he has worked across in his career; he regularly incorporates painting, video and electronic imaging in installations and continues to observe the fragile balance between human presence and the natural world.

An emeritus professor of communications at Arcadia University, Alan serves on the board of Philadelphia-based collective Termite TV and Signal Culture in Owego, NY.

Alan Powell

Alan Powell is an internationally exhibiting electronic media artist working in video, photography, performance, and multichannel installation. His 50-year career has been grounded in collaboration, community engagement, and embracing technological evolution in his artistic practice. He holds an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. In the 1970s, Alan co-founded Electron Movers, the video artist collective and Providence, RI’s first Media Arts Center. Electron Movers were vanguards in proving the capacity of video as an art form while staying deeply connected to Providence with immersive performances and community-oriented creative models.

Over five decades, Alan’s work has shown at The Kitchen, Hallswalls, CEPA, and The Museum of the Moving Image in New York; the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia; The Long Beach Museum in California and the Musee d’Arte Moderne in Paris. Videotapes from Alan’s thirty-year collaboration with Connie Coleman, his late partner, have been broadcast on PBS and are archived at Cornell University Library and Electronic Arts Intermix in NYC.

During their partnership, Alan and Coleman delved into experimental documentary, sculptural installation, as well as a return to their artistic backgrounds of traditional printmaking and fine arts to investigate mass media and explore culture and language systems.

Following Coleman’s death, Alan relocated his studio to the Catskills. His daily practice brings into alignment all the mediums he has worked across in his career; he regularly incorporates painting, video and electronic imaging in installations and continues to observe the fragile balance between human presence and the natural world.

An emeritus professor of communications at Arcadia University, Alan serves on the board of Philadelphia-based collective Termite TV and Signal Culture in Owego, NY.

Friday Night at Green Kill

Starting March 2026, Green Kill invites visual artists to be part of Friday Night at Green Kill, a lively salon-like monthly exhibition program where creativity meets community. Each artist can display one artwork (painting, print, or photograph) up to 30” x 60”. To join, send an image of your piece, a short artist statement, and a participation request to 229greenkill@greenkill.org. If accepted, your work will be featured online and exhibited during first and third Friday events—with up to 15 artists per night. There’s no entry fee, and you can sell your artwork (up to $2,000) with a 30% gallery commission on sales. Come enjoy an evening of art, open mic performances, and good company! Learn more.
