Mark Donato

Mark Donato grew up musically in southwestern Pennsylvania, Downtown New York City, and Upstate New York. He’s worked as a drummer and singer with John Linnell of They Might Be Giants, Amy Allison, Flat Old Word, Rosine, and the Oswalds, while piling up songs for his own releases.

He writes eccentric and poetic rock songs and earthy, experimental pop that’s profound and tuneful, layered with subtle irony, humanistic pathos, and a kind of psychological perfect pitch.

He has 7 full-length records and many more songs ready to be dressed and served. His new record is called “Community Theater,” in honor of the honorable tradition of locals performing for locals, and locals listening. Joining Mark on the record, and in his live appearances, are some of the finest musicians in the Hudson Valley.

Federico Balducci

The music of Puerto Rican guitarist and composer Federico Balducci can be described as a mixture of classical and ambient music with unusually intricate harmonies. Federico Balducci has a Bachelor’s Degree in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music.

Belltonesuicide

Belltonesuicide started in 1998 as GAT384, named after a license plate seen one time. Name was changed to Belltonesuicide in 1999. Summer 98 was spent making derelict sound experiments using a sampler, bass guitar, organ, junk electronics. Peter Head

I realized years ago that if I’m making something, and it doesn’t really matter what, I’m happy. If I am not actively making something, I am less happy. I do a lot of automatic drawing to see what I can dredge up. I try to access the subconscious side of my brain. I try to keep busy and always stay open to the next weird idea, silly idea, dark idea, absurd idea…I always carry pen and paper and try to remember that even tying your shoes can be art if you draw the right frame around it.

Knox Chandler

Knox Chandler is an American musician, producer, arranger, and visual artist whose career spans over four decades. He has worked with The Psychedelic Furs, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cyndi Lauper, R.E.M., Depeche Mode, Grace Jones, and Dave Gahan, among others. After a decade in Berlin, where he developed his layered guitar technique called Soundribbons, he returned to the U.S. and settled on the Connecticut shoreline.

BUZZER

Buzzer is the third iteration of a project started 15 years ago by Peter Head, red-hot guitarist of legendary Hudson Valley “apocabilly” band Pitchfork Militia, to explore and experiment with prog- and fusion-influenced improvisational rock in partnership with iconoclastic bassist John Fay. They have recorded hundreds of hours of music together under other band names (Firebug, Elephant Graveyard) and with other drummers from John Fay’s former bands. In 2018 they were joined by in-demand percussionist Amit Shamir (Cro-Mags, Ted Orr projects, The Classics) and continue to create intense off-the-cuff jams that often feel like complex compositions but are simply the manifestation of three seasoned artists speaking their unique language and sharing their life experiences in the moment.

YONNETTI & COMPANY started a long time ago with an Idea to create a space where different musicians with their own style and flair could all come together into a blend of Acid style music….. not quite fitting into any certain Genres as it’s really part of all of them. We are far from a cover band and very original, although you may hear something that sounds…. Familiar.

Emerging from the dirt of CBGB and the ‘70s NYC underground, bassist Dave Strahl has a style rooted in the downtown punk and no wave scenes. His playing first attracted attention in the band New Noise Continuum. Strahl mixes old with new, up with down, and in without. Before relocating to Kingston, he was the owner and operator of NYC’s Candy Ear Studios, where he engineered and/or produced recordings by a variety of artists including Jackson Smith of the Patti Smith Group, actor/DJ Idris Elba and Latin flutist Roberto Pitre to name a few. His rehearsal studio, Grey Area, was home to several bands including Helmet, Foetus, The Cro Mags, Prong and the Swans.

Meet Route One — the talented duo of Mikal Federici and Anna Savchuk — who recently took the stage at Robyn Hager’s White Noise Open Mic at Green Kill, sharing a few of their original songs.

Route One (Mikal Federici & Anna Savchuk) is a singer/songwriter duo formed in 2024, in Asheville, North Carolina. Following the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the pair moved north, resettling in Warwick, N.Y. With scores of clever and catchy original music, along with handfuls of complementary covers, Route One touches on notes of folk, pop, rock and blues, combining the standard musical forms into a package that is all their own. Between sweet, mellifluous harmonies, shadowy minor-key pieces, or charging rock progressions, Route One explores the range of the American musical idiom, with lyrical content that does just the same. The clean, unburdened two-piece arrangement between Federici & Savchuk gives listeners a chance to connect with both the duo and the songs they deliver, making for intimate performances audiences are sure to remember.

33 1/3 & UNDER: MEET POET ROBYN HAGER

For twenty-six-year-old Robyn Hager, poetry is both a means of reflecting upon and making sense of the human condition and celebrating the beauty of her beloved Hudson Valley.

Robyn’s love affair with expressing herself through words began in an unlikely way, as an elementary schooler crafting fanfiction based on her favorite books. In time, she would come to devote herself to poetry, publishing her debut collection, Sewage Flowers (NDR Press), at the age of 19, followed by works featured in literary journals such as Vocivia Magazine, Acid Bath, and Lightwood Press. Her latest collection, Strawberry Season and 41 Other Poems, will be published in an upcoming edition of Pulpit Magazine.

Today, Robyn is one of the most active and energetic wordsmiths in the Hudson Valley. Since 2021, she has hosted over 60 open-mic events titled “White Noise” at Kingston’s Green Kill Gallery. She is also co-curator of the day-long New Year’s Day Spoken Word Marathon, an event created by poet Bruce Weber and his artist-wife Joanne Pagano Weber, which began in NYC and is now headquartered in the Hudson Valley.

Not one to rest on her laurels when it comes to creative expression, Robyn has recently immersed herself in the world of fiber arts and crocheting. Her goal with this new hobby? It’s to craft some suitably funky apparel that she now wears for some of her readings, as well as some that can be purchased on a dedicated Instagram site.

Spaceheater

Spaceheater is a quartet comprised of four veteran Hudson Valley musicians, guitarists Rick Warren and Sal Cataldi, bassist Dave Strahl and drummer April Drums.  Together, they put their effects-driven guitars, thumping bass, and polyrhythmic drum assault to work on everything from the heaviest rock to jazz and blues to ambient and industrial sounds, in both originals and obscure covers. The latter spans from early Pink Floyd to electric-era Miles Davis and Terje Rypdal to psych/garage classics like Eight Miles High and Rumble. The band regularly performs at popular Hudson Valley venues, including the Colony, Pearl Moon, and The Station Bar in Woodstock, The Tinker Street Tavern at the Bearsville Theater, West Kill Supply, and Green Kill Sessions in Kingston, Snug Harbor in New Paltz, and many more.

Spaceheater is an appropriate name for the group as it was birthed during rehearsals in the winter months of 2021/22 at Kingston’s Green Kill art gallery. While jamming there, the group was warmed by space heaters, ones whose fumes may have played a role in imbuing their work with its unique hallucinatory bend.  Their sound combines the loose meandering jams of “St. Stephen”-flavored Grateful Dead with the edgy prog/industrial/space rock improvs of latter-day King Crimson and Krautrock.  Hudson Valley One recently called the band: “A powerhouse of genre-defying sounds, blending heavy rock, jazz, blues ambient and industrial influences.”

Warren and Cataldi have been working together for two years in the experimental duo, Guitars A Go Go, during which time they produced the acclaimed debut CD, Travel Advisory.  Hudson-based Warren studied improvisation at The Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, led by renowned jazz vibist Karl Berger. He is active with the Hudson-based Slink Moss and the Magic Stones, and with the popular acoustic folk duo Rick and Marilyn, featuring songwriter Marilyn Miller.  West Saugerties-based Sal Cataldi is best known for his acid jazz meets folktronica solo project Spaghetti Eastern Music, which has been acclaimed in media like The New York Times. He is one half of the duo, The Vapor Vespers, a music/spoken word project with Alaskan poet Mark Muro, and the Hari Karaoke Trio of Doom with Kansas City drummer D. Hitchcock, a group featuring contributions by noted players like Eno/Brand X bassist Percy Jones. Cataldi also composes and performs live solo electric guitar scores for movement works by Charles Dennis, the noted NYC/Hudson Valley-based performance artist and co-founder of NYC’s P.S. 122, and filmmaker/for ABT ballerina Hanna Bass.  He is also a music journalist who contributes to The New York Times, NYSMusic, No Depression, and more. He is also the host of “Reading Is Funktamental,” a monthly one-hour show on Wave Farm/WGXC 90.7 in the Hudson Valley, where he interviews the authors and musicians about great books of music.
