Michael Eaton (b. 1981) is a Brooklyn based saxophonist, composer, and educator active in contemporary jazz and free improvisation. Embracing a progressive and holistic vision of jazz, Eaton reaches for a personal outlook with an eye towards future possibilities.
Michael leads Individuation, a jazz ensemble that combines modern jazz with elements of postminimalism, world rhythms, and open improvisation. They have two recordings on Destiny Records, Individuation (2014, featuring NEA Jazz Master David Liebman) and Dialogical (2019, featuring master improviser and guitarist Lionel Loueke).
On Dialogical, AllAboutJazz's Troy Dostert said "there is more than enough promising music on Dialogical to justify Eaton's status as a force to be reckoned with in today's jazz world."
Eaton also heads Tenor Triage, an outward bound and saxophonic take on the three tenors format. With fellow saxophonists James Brandon Lewis and Sean Sonderegger, the band’s chemistry melds harmolodics and hymnic free jazz with groove and caterwauling polyphony. The band's release for Ropeadope Records, Tenor Triage (2019), enlists bassist Brad Jones and drummer Calvin Weston, both alumni of Ornette Coleman.
Embarking on a third stream and post bop-flavored piano/saxophone duo with pianist Nicki Adams, the two can be heard on Paraphrase for Steeplechase Records. Dusty Groove notes the interplay is "at a level that's very different than any sort of old school duets of this nature! Neither player is pulling back at all - there's less of the sense of "you go first, then me" here - because the instruments roll together with a shared sense of fludity, tone, and color...."
Michael also enjoys an association with flutist/composer/lyricist Cheryl Pyle in Beyond Group, an NYC free improvised chamber wind group. With a rotating cast, the group has enjoyed associations with distinctive artists such as Bern Nix, Judi Silvano, Newman Taylor Baker, Roberta Piket, Claire de Brunner, Hilliard Greene, Gene Coleman, Claire Daly, Daniel Carter, Sam Newsome, Jamie Baum, and Carman Moore.
