Out of This World, The Hudson Valley New Year's Day Spoken Word/Performance Extravaganza
The seven-hour event OUT OF THIS WORLD will feature more than 120 performers – poets, writers, musicians and dancers- drawn from the Hudson Valley region. In the spirit of democracy, the event will include an open mic. Among the many notable performers are Michael Bisio, Katherine Burger, Sal Cataldi, Celeste Graves, Amanda Nicole Gulla, Mikhail Horowitz. Lissa Kiernan, Phillip X. Levine, Linda Montano, Kathy Z. Price, George Quasha, Christy Rupp, Victoria Sullivan, Daniel Villegas, and Robert Burke Warren. Stage sets by Saugerties artist Joanne Pagano Weber will reflect the OUT OF THIS WORLD theme.
Admission is free. Donations gratefully accepted of non-perishable food or drink for the Saugerties Food Pantry and books for the Greene Correctional Facility. This includes distributing the spoken word to prison inmates through donations of books, new and used, fiction and nonfiction, hardcover and paperback. In addition, with food insecurity growing all over the U.S., this year’s event organizers are encouraging all attendees to bring non-perishable food and beverages.
The Hudson Valley New Year’s Day extravaganza, produced by poet Bruce Weber, is the continuation of a long tradition. Weber organized an annual New Year’s Day spoken word event/performance event in Manhattan from 1995 to 2019. This will be the fifth year that the event is being held in the Hudson Valley. The Newberry Artisan Market is located in the center of Saugerties village, in a 10,000 square foot vintage building that housed the popular J.J. Newberry five-and-dime store in the early-to mid 20th century. “We’re especially excited that this year we’re going to be at the Newberry Market,” says Weber. “It’s a venue that has brought a growing community of artists and bold new perspectives to the area.”
